706 pediatric nurses from Hamad Medical Corporation completed subspecialty education courses provided by SickKids. SickKids submitted nine sub-specialty educational courses to the University of Toronto, Faculty of Nursing Department for certificate accreditation. All nine programs were successful in being awarded certificate status. This amazing achievement could not have gone unnoticed and so, with the help of SickKids and the University of Toronto, the HMC/SickKids Partnership Project organized a two day ceremony that recognized each and every nurse that completed their education.

Each nurse received a certificate of completion by the University of Toronto’s Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing which is an outstanding professional faculty that ranks among the premier nursing programs in the world with regards to both education and research. There were nine subspecialty courses in total which included:
- PICU
- NICU
- Hematology/Oncology
- Emergency
- Pediatric surgery
- Vascular access
- Cardio-respiratory
- Nephrology
- General pediatric upskilling
The certificates were personally awarded by Dr. Ann Marie Cannaby, Executive Director of Nursing at HMC, Ms. Leslie Vincent, Executive Director of the Center for Professional Development at the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing and Ms. Pam Hubley, Chief of Professional Practice and Nursing at SickKids.

Due to the large number of nurses collecting certificates, there were two sessions per day to accommodate up to 200 nurses per session. During the ceremonies, nurses walked up on stage one by one to collect their certificates and have a photo taken. As well as speeches from Dr. Ann Marie, Ms. Leslie and Ms. Pam, guests were also treated to a slice of cake and a gift bag each.
Dr. Ann Marie commented that accreditation through the University of Toronto informs patients and the public that the nurses at HMC have met a quality standard. “It demonstrates both their knowledge and skills and is another example of our commitment to quality and accountability. I am very proud of the 706 nurses who have acquired their accreditation” Dr. Cannaby said. “I am confident that their hard work and dedication will continue to improve the health outcomes of their patients through the delivery of safe, effective and compassionate care.”

‘Children First’ spoke to PICU Staff Nurse Alice Lopez who attended one of the ceremonies to collect her certificates. ‘I received two certificates for PICU Subspecialty Education and for Upskilling Education. The whole session was well organized and my colleagues and I were so excited to hear the speeches from the guest speakers, we really appreciated them coming to present our certificates to us. Being recognized for our achievements as nurses encourages confidence and motivation, it definitely allows us to be more inspired to improve the quality of care we provide to the children.’
